Julian Robert Dewberry was born in Searcy, Ark., on October 31, 1917. He passed away in Searcy on December 9, 2005. The son of Mr. and Mrs. John Dewberry, he grew up in Searcy, graduated from Searcy High School in 1935, and in 1939 received a bachelors degree in European History from Harding College. He lettered in varsity basketball at Harding and, as a senior, was leading scorer and captain of the team.

He had a distinguished military career beginning with the Army National Guard in 1939 after graduation from Harding. When war was declared in 1941, he enlisted full-time in the United States Army serving two campaigns; in the Aleutian Islands and later in Europe. He was commissioned 2nd lieutenant after graduating from OCS in Ft. Benning, Ga. During his career he was awarded a Bronze Star with the 102 Infantry Division and a European (EAME) Theatre Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars. He resigned from active duty at the end of the war in 1945 as Captain.

He and Betty Fitzhugh, of Augusta, Ark., were married on July 12, 1947, in Batesville. After a short stint in the retail clothing business in Searcy, they moved to Memphis where he joined Weil Brothers Cotton as a cotton buyer.

They moved to Fresno, Calif., in 1956 where he was named assistant manager of Well’s Fargo office. He later was named manager and served in that position for over 20 years. He retired from Weil Brothers in 1989 after nearly 40 years of service and moved to Augusta where he and Betty made their home. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in McCrory.

During his career in the cotton business, he held a number of industry leadership positions including President of the Fresno Cotton Exchange and Vice President and President of Western Cotton Shippers Association. A major influence in San Joaquin Valley cotton marketing, he was often quoted in both local and national press on western cotton production estimates as well as cotton import and export levels.

He is survived by his wife Betty; sons and daughter-in-law, John Fitzhugh and Julie Dewberry of Houston, Texas, and Michael Kent Dewberry of Los Angeles, Calif.; four grandchildren, Patrick Dewberry, Christopher Dewberry and Julian Dewberry; and two great-grandchildren Jordan and Taylor DeMasters.
