John A. Mercer

John A Mercer, Sr. resident of Searcy, died Saturday, March 18, 2006 at his home. He was 72 years of age.

A memorial service with military honors was conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Complete in Christ Church in Searcy.

Mr. Mercer was born Feb. 17, 1934 in Tabor City, N.C., the son of William and Mayola Johnson Mercer. He retired from the United State Army after more than 20 years of service, having served in the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, and six Good Conduct Medals. For many years, Mr. Mercer served as the Mayor for the City of Pangburn. He was a member of the Complete in Christ Church and the Eastern Star. Mr. Mercer was a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and had in the past served as the Master of Lodge in Pangburn.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Robbins Mercer of the home; sons, Richard Mercer and John Mercer, Jr. both of Searcy, Keith Mercer of Pembroke, N.C.; daughters, Belinda Mercer of Searcy and Donna Moorehead of Pangburn; step-son, Jason Page of Searcy; step-daughter, Erica Collins of Jonesboro; a brother, Archie Hagens of Lumberton, N.C.; two sisters, Evelyn Morrow of Gallipolis, Ohio and Judy Monday of Baltimore, Md.; twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Alvin Mercer.
