| By Holly Latimer Staff writer for the Searcy Sun/White County Record 1-7 April 2004 A billboard reminding drivers about the military personnel stationed overseas is being planned by the Military Family Awareness Committee. The committee voted Friday to rent a billboard facing traffic heading south down Arkansas 67/167. Money to pay for painting the billboard will be furnished by Rita Stricklarid who has established a fund for military family activities by selling T-shirts with an American flag and a yellow ribbon. The money to finance the monthly rent of $200 will be raised by the committee. The committee will be contacting local businesses to ask for assistance for billboard rent. The committee is also still planning its graduation reception for area students who have a family member serving overseas. Ten people are expected to attend the ceremony. The committee also continues to work on its yellow ribbon campaign. Tanya Burleson told the committee she talked to Brian Smith about placing yellow ribbons in one of the city parks. Burleson said she was told the committee could bring yellow ribbons to the parks and recreation department to place on the fence posts in Berryhill Park. Burleson is researching ribbon prices and ways to place the soldiers names on the ribbons. The ribbons will be $5 each and can be obtained by calling Burleson at 279-6204 or going by her office, by calling Strickland at 724-6338 or by calling Bambi George at 278-5320. |
