Bradford Mayor Paul Bunn and Bradford Chief of Police Josh Chambliss were among the nearly 3,000 soldiers from the Arkansas Army National Guard s 39th In- fantry Brigade recently notified that they had been mobilized for federal active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
This is the first mobilization of a National Guard Infantry Brigade since the Korean War,
said Maj. Cary Shillcutt, a member of the 2nd Battalion, 153rd In- fantry, headquartered in Searcy. Arkansas has never done this. We were one of two enhanced Nation- al Guard Brigades in the nation chosen to go and do this.
Bunn was first notified in March that he had been activated for deployment and began prepar- ing clerk/treasurer Greba Edens to assume the mayoral responsibili- ties during his absence.
Miss Greba and I sat down and made a list of objectives that I campaigned for and she has as- sured me that she will carry those out, Bunn said.
Even though his activation was delayed and some of the critical is- sues facing the city six months ago have been resolved, Bunn said Edens remains enthusiastic about serving as interim mayor.
Its exciting for her, he said. She will be very hands on.
Chambliss was placed on standby in March and also began
makins,t~e necessary arrange- ments iri"the police department. Assistant Chief of Police Michael Ray has been designated to serve as interim chief during Chambliss deployment. In order to maintain the current level of police protec- tion within the city, officer Eddie Cullum was also added to the de- partment.
Additionally, Lori Miller was hired to fill a position created by city leaders, entitled assistant to the mayor, to relieve a portion of the administrative responsibilities currently handled by Bunn and Edens.
