PETITION FOR NEW COURTHOUSE LOCATION

SIGNATURES FOLLOWING PETITION; THESE WERE SOME OF THE FIRST SETTLERS

We the undersigners-citizens of White Co., feling our selves much agreaved & Laboring under many disadvantages for the want of a County Seat do therefore petition your Hon'l body to locate the Same on the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 10 in township 7N & range 8W the place known as the property of John Howerton James Walker & John Cook cald Searcy, & for which the said John Howereton James Walker & John Cook do agree to donate to the County 10 acres of Said purposs to be layd off in a square tract of the NW corner of Said land above named & also John Howerton doth agree to donate 4 acres-adjoining Said Acres on the N side.

The commicationers heare to fore elected by the voters of the County for the purposes of Selecting a County Seat- have entirely faild in the object for which they were elected. Three of the number did Select a place and sold lots but never mad titles the Site Selected by them is entirely objectionable to a large majority of the citizens of the County. We hope therefore you Hon'l body will take the subject into consideration & grant us a petition & we further Recommend to you Hon'l body John Magness Micall Owens & John Arnold as Suitable men for Commitioners to carry into effect the above object & we your petitioners will ever pray, Etc.

(The people who wanted the other site - Frankfort - didn't sign. They were Ephraim Guthrie, Reuben Stephens & Sherrod Arnold.)

County Court Record-Vol. I, Page 65, Nov. 1939

The commissioners presented their account of one hundred and thirty eight dollars and fifty cents for the building and completition of the courthouse, which was considered by the court to be just. It is considered by the said court to allow the above amount, to wit $138.50 with interest at 6 per cent from the 10th day of June A.D. 1839 to be liquidated out of the first proceeds answering from the sale of the town lots.

The Clerk is ordered by the court to have a table made four feet wide and eight feet long fot the use of the courthouse and two benches ten feet long of proper width and height. Two benches four feet long. Also to have the window sash filled with sights.

It is ordered by the court that the Clerk have built a ?????? of the following diminsions, to wit, to be twenty five yards square. To be made ten riders high ?????? staked and ??????. To be built upon the northwest corner of the donation and for use of a stray pen. (The contents of the ?????? was undetermined).
