About CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate)

CASA is part of a nationwide organization that began in Seattle, WA in 1977 and has volunteers from all types of backgrounds and professions.
They use volunteers to speak for abused and neglected children in the court system. They work to provide these children safe, permanent homes by providing the judge with carefully researched background information and making recommendations on the children's placement.
CASA's goal is to provide an advocate for each abused and neglected child that needs one.
Children who have been assigned to a CASA volunteer spend less time within the foster care system than those who do not have a CASA.
They find safe, permanent homes more quickly.
Volunteers have 30 hours of training and typically work about 10 to 15 hours a month. To become a volunteer. a person must be at least 21-years-old, be able to give about 10 hours of their time a month, submit to a background check, and be willing to commit to one year of service.
The Department of Human Services in White County investigates an average of 100 to 120 reports of child maltreatment a month.

CASA is taking applications for fall training. The six-session training starts Oct. 12.

For an application or more information please call 305-3428 or e-mail Jodi Graul, case coordinator, at jodi_g@wccasa.org.
